One of the most sought-after pieces in Danish mid-century ceramics — the “Relief” butter box by Jens Harald Quistgaard (1919–2008).
Designed in 1957 for Kronjyden (later continued by Nissen and Bing & Grøndahl), Relief is among Quistgaard’s most iconic and enduring works. The series takes its name from the tactile, embossed leaf pattern covering the warm ochre-yellow stoneware — a motif that feels as fresh today as it did in the late 1950s.
This piece comes with its original wengé wood lid, which doubles as a small serving tray or board — a characteristically clever Scandinavian solution where nothing is superfluous and everything serves a purpose.
Fully stamped on the base with the Kronjyden / Bing & Grøndahl mark, confirming Danish origin and authenticity.
Quistgaard is internationally recognised as one of the defining figures of Scandinavian modern design — best known for his work with Dansk Designs, his pieces are collected worldwide and found in museum collections across Europe and the US.
Condition: Good vintage condition with light patina consistent with age. No chips, no cracks. The wengé lid shows natural aging and grain.
Dimensions (approx.): 12 × 9 × 7 cm / 4.7 × 3.5 × 2.75 inches
