Butter dish with lid in hand-painted faience, designed by Ivan Weiss for Royal Copenhagen, Denmark. The lid is decorated with a delicate motif of bare branches in grey-black against a soft sky-blue glaze — a characteristic example of Ivan Weiss' refined, nature-inspired aesthetic developed during his long collaboration with Royal Copenhagen from the 1970s onwards.
The dish consists of a rectangular lidded butter box and a matching tray, both in the same pale blue glaze. Clean, elegant Scandinavian design with a quiet, painterly quality.
Ivan Weiss (b. 1946) trained as an overglaze painter at Royal Copenhagen at the age of sixteen and worked with the factory for over 40 years, studying ceramics in Japan and collaborating closely with artistic director Nils Thorsson.
